Retro Studios, developers of the Metroid Prime series and Donkey Kong Country Returns, has reportedly hired members of Vigil (Darksiders), Junction Point (Epic Mickey), and Bioware (Mass Effect), according to GoNintendo. The company has been rumored to be working on a major Wii U title for over a year now.
Early 2012 gave us a hint of big things in the works at Retro. Former Naughty Dog (Uncharted, The Last of Us) artist, Eric Kozlowsky, was picked up by the Texas-based developer. Kozlowsky wrote last year:
“I am going to work on another project that I am super excited about. I can’t talk about it too much but if all goes well it might just be one of my crowning achievements as an artist.”
Retro went from being an unknown developer in Texas to becoming one of Nintendo’s top western studios after releasing three critically praised Metroid Prime games. The company finally got to work on something new with Donkey Kong Country Returns. But DKCR was released in 2010. What has the company been up to lately? Retro’s big project was rumored to have been set for reveal at last year’s E3 convention, but was pulled at the last second for unknown reasons. But given the game history of the developers being poached, it’s safe to assume that Nintendo has big plans for the game.
Stay tuned for more news as it hits.
