The Playstation 4 launches this year head to head with not just the Xbox One, but Sony’s own Playstation 3 as well.
Sony knows that this is a marathon, not a sprint. Look how badly they screwed up the PlayStation 3 - no launch exclusives (except Resistance) a year late to the market, far more expensive than the 360, the list goes on. And now they've overtaken the sales of the 360. Sony don't want people rushing out to sell their PlayStation 3 to get the PlayStation 4. Even adverts have said "there's never been a better time to own a PlayStation 3" a brilliant move by Sony as they're still going to be selling PlayStation 3's for the next 3 years which means another 30,000,000 sales that they wouldn't have got by making the PlayStation 3 obsolete. They're not competing with themselves, they're complimenting themselves because the only people that will get a PS4 or XBO before 2015 (when next gen really starts) are those that are either hardcore gamers or hardcore fans. And hardcore gamers/fans are the tiniest minority of those that actually buy consoles. If you compare the launch of the PlayStation 4 to the PlayStation 3, the PlayStation 4 is doing fantastically, they have a huge headstart on this generation compared to last generation and with 13 developers owned by Sony making exclusives (Naughty Dog, SCE Santa Monica, Guerilla Games, Sucker Punch, Media Molecule) to name a few - they will not be short of exclusives. And that doesn't include developers that aren't owned by Sony that do exclusives for them simply because of such a great business relationship such as Quantic Dream (makers of Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls). Sony will obviously be slowing down on the PlayStation 3-only titles because it's not their flagship console anymore. But they want people to own one because they don't want people to only have a PlayStation 4, they want them to have a PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita too. I'm one of those and it will be these people that benefit most from PlayStation Plus and PlayStation exclusive titles.
I'm not a fanboy, simply a gamer that has no reason to own two home console systems of the same generation at the same time and prefers PlayStation. I'm looking forward to the next console generation and I would like to see Microsoft's strategy leading up to it.
I think you have a very good point there. I know i'm not going to bother getting a PS4 untill the big games that won't be out on the 360 and ps3 drop.
So probably a year a tleast. till then i'm happy with my WiiU and 3ds. I've just got Pikmin 3, the rest of the years looking pretty damn rosey on nintendo hardware. It'll probably end up with the current gen ports of watchdogs ACIV and Batman too becuase ubisoft and Warner actually bother putting the work in with the console.
@wheresmymonkey I'm definitely getting Batman and Watch Dogs for the Wii U. Watch Dogs especially has me excited because of the Gamepad. I hope they do a decent port of it.
